A bit of a break from the Designer Diaries series is on deck today. Recently Queen Mathilde and King Philippe visited the Campus Salvator of the Jessa Hospital, a Flemish hospital specializing in clinical medicine. The couple discussed the role of the hospital in the fight against the Covid virus.
The Facts
Queen Mathilde wore Carolina Herrera, and in total Tils fashion, she wore it head to toe. The dress is a CH Carolina Herrera houndstooth design, and the shoes are also Herrera, in the same pattern. The dress is sleeveless and has a small-rise mock turtle neckline. The waist falls slightly above the natural waistline and is set off with a black belt. The Queen accessorized with a short cardigan worn over her shoulders, and a black bangle.

The Case for the Dress
The Bag – I have a weakness for houndstooth and although I am usually (well, almost absolutely always) against matching shoes, in this case I say pile it on. It suits her and you can never get enough Herrera or houndstooth.
The Case Against the Dress
OC: I am all aboard the black & white houndstooth head to toe (LOVE the shoes), but this Herrera is so not for this lady.
LG: First, I love those shoes, and if I could still wear heels, they’d be mine. Second, this dress is doing no favors for our lovely Tilly. Maybe if she lost the belt…
LiL: Nope. The pattern is nice, but it doesn’t suit her proportions. At all.
Bonus Queens
Lest you think things run smoothly backstage (HINT: THEY DO NOT), I added the following bonus late so the other Hofdames didn’t have time to chime in. They have lives and all. These dresses all seem to have a theme, don’t they? I like them both, a lot, so really not a big defense required in either case, but since we’ll all be on vacation next week we had to pack it all in.
During two recent visits, we saw Queen Maxima in a Natan Houndstooth ensemble with Gianvito Rossi pumps, and Queen Letizia in a Glen Check Hugo Boss sheath.
