The Haga Princesses: Part 1-Margaretha

The four older sisters of Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf are Margaretha, Birgitta, Désirée, and Christina. Over the years, they have become known as the Haga Princesses. We’ll take a few moments to get to know these ladies a bit more over the coming weeks. First up is the eldest, Margaretha Désirée Victoria.

Margaretha was born October 31, 1934 during the reign of her paternal great grandfather, King Gustav V. The first child of Prince Gustaf Adolf, Duke of Västerbotten and his wife Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Margaretha was never in line for the throne as the Swedish tradition at the time was male primogeniture.

Margaretha has never really had any official duties or obligations on behalf of the Swedish royal family, but has made many appearances over the years.

Margaretha married Mr. John Ambler in 1964 and lost her style of Her Royal Highness. She has since been styled Princess Margaretha, Mrs. Ambler, as a courtesy granted by the King. The Amblers had three children and remained married through the time of Mr. Ambler’s death in 2008.

A Princess should have tiaras at any age, right?
