Open Jubilee Post – Trooping the Colour (Updated)!

The schedule for all Jubilee events is here.

The Queen is the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee. Think about that. Let that sink in. It’s an amazing, unprecedented event. To celebrate her seventy years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms, and the Commonwealth, we here at the Handbag are throwing our biggest party yet. Baguettes and Hofdudes, you are center stage. There is no way we can keep up with what’s happening, so we are relying on you to provide on-the-spot commentary in the comments.

We will have Open Posts Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for the events. Please contain conversation within those posts! Several senior members of the royal family will also travel during the long weekend. Prince William and Kate will travel to Wales (Saturday), Prince Edward and Sophie will be in Northern Ireland (day TBA), and Princess Anne will visit Scotland (Friday), so those visits can be discussed on the Open Posts as well.

Finally, if you are lucky enough to attend a Jubilee party, private or community, please feel free to post photos in the comments. Share the joy!

First up, Trooping the Colour. Per the Royal website, “The colour will be trooped by the 1st Battalion, Irish Guards, and more than 1200 officers and soldiers from the Household Division will put on a display of military pageantry on Horse Guards Parade, together with hundreds of Army musicians and around 240 horses.”

The working members of the family arrived in three carriages. The Duchess of Cornwall, Duchess of Cambridge, and the Cambridge children were in the first carriage. Cams is re-wearing her “ribbon dress”, and Catherine is wearing Diana’s sapphire cluster earrings. Great hats on both ladies. Catherine’s hat is by Philip Treacy. Prince Louis is wearing one of his father’s old sailor suits!

The Wessex family coordinated in pink tones. Yes, Lady Louise is re-wearing her mother’s early 2000s “Suess” hat, a Philip Treacy concoction.

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester arrived in a carriage, too. The Duchess of Gloucester has done our hearts good by blinging it up on her beanie hat!

Prince Charles, Prince William, and Princess Anne rode out on horseback to take the salute.

She was joined for the flypast by the rest of the working royal family and their children.

The extended family (mostly non-working royals) watched at a big party at the Horse Guards. Mr. and Mrs. Tindall were gracious enough to give us a full view of their ensembles first! Zara’s dress is by Beulah.

Meghan, Isla, and Lena watching from the Horse Guards window. The Duchess of Sussex’s hat is by Stephen Jones.

Did you think we’d forget about Seamus?

Platinum Jubilee Beacons

The lighting of beacons across the UK is a traditional activity commemorating royal birthdays, weddings, and jubilees, symbolizing national unity. There will be beacons in communities across the nation, and the principal beacon will be lit in a special ceremony at Buckingham Palace. This “Tree of Trees” (a 21m high ‘tree’ constructed of 350 smaller trees), will be lit at 9pm local time by Prince William. His grandmother, The Queen, will light a beacon at Windsor.

To the younger generation. Beautiful and touching.
