On January 14th 1972, King Frederik IX died from complications of a heart attack at age 72, making his first born daughter, 32 year old Margrethe Alexandrine Þórhildur Ingrid, the first ruling queen of the world’s oldest monarchy in over 600 years.
The new Queen Margrethe II addressed the country the following day from the balcony at Christiansborg Palace.
