Random Royaling – Margaret of Connaught’s Bracelet Tradition

I started off posting the latest Danish holiday photo, but went down a rabbit hole. Want to fall down with me? C’mon, it’s fun, I promise.

I would honestly annoint Margaret of Connaught the patron saint of this blog. She gave so much: Danish wedding lace, dozens of royal descendants, and her gift of a gold bracelet to her daughter Ingrid, which started a major jewelry tradition in the family.

It’s actually a tradition that reaches slightly further back. Both Margaret and her sister Patricia were photographed wearing similar gold bracelets in their youth, and it’s been speculated on royal blogs and discussion forums for years that the actual beginnings of this tradition can be traced to their mother, Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia. Just gaze at the fuzzy photo from the Wiki entry and tell me if you think that is a gold banded bracelet on her arm.

The tradition was in full swing for Margaret and Patricia, as bracelets can be spotted in both photos below. Princess Patricia is in the top photo, and Margaret and young Ingrid in the second photo. The bracelet has (almost) always appeared on the left arm.

When we get to Ingrid and her three daughters, spotting the bracelet becomes easier. Various sources indicate that the bracelet is given at age five, and swapped out at some point for a larger, adult version.

The nice thing about having a tradition with jewelry that is so simple and timeless is that it can be continued for generations. It can be worn by many people, with different styles and different lives. It can be worn for a full out gala occasion, a wedding, and it can be worn for much less dressy occasions.

It can be worn by the very young. Zoom in, it’s there!

It can be worn in the later stages of life (yes, I included the Betty photo even though you can’t see the bracelet because, well, why not?)

And finally, the point of my post (ahem). Spot the bracelet in the lovely new photograph of the Danes. (Hint: you may have to click through the slide show). Also, maybe Vincent is starting a bracelet tradition of his own – this remains to be seen.
