Pop-Up Post – Nobel Ceremonies

Housekeeping Note: Comments on this post will be open until Tuesday morning.

Alfred Nobel established the Nobel Foundation in his 1895 will, directing that prizes be awarded to individuals who have “conferred the greatest benefit to mankind.” The following fields are honored: physics, chemistry, literature, physiology or medicine, and peace. The first four awards are bestowed in Sweden, and the peace prize is awarded in Norway. The official site, including the 2023 laureates, is here.

For our more frivolous purposes, it’s an opportunity to see the royal families in both Norway and Sweden fête the honorees. The Norwegian ceremony is in the daytime and is lower-key, but the evening gala in Sweden brings out gowns and tiaras.

Schedule and Streaming

The Nobel ceremonies are held annually on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. King Carl Gustaf typically holds a dinner on the next evening for the winners. The dinner is also a tiara event!

The livestreams for the Sunday events are located on the Nobel site. The peace prize will be awarded at 1:00 p.m. local time, and the Swedish festivities, including the other prizes, will be at 4:00 p.m. local time.
